About Us
The WWC has operated since 1985, offering women-only services at Cheapside in Wakefield city centre and at outreach centres in the district, providing a holistic, non-medical approach to women’s health and well-being. We have a range of services; the largest being our counselling service which offers free, long-term counselling, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy/Computerized CBT, and specifically, counselling for issues dealing with unplanned pregnancies. Unlike many counselling services, there is no limit to the number of sessions a woman can attend here at the centre. We also offer low cost and full cost complementary therapies, free personal development courses, such as anxiety management, and a new menopause support group. Women can contact the centre to access a range of health and social information and we offer free pregnancy testing also. Further information on all of our services can be found in the menu bar of the website.
Women find out about the centre from a number of sources: from friends and family, GP’s,NHS workers, Mental Health teams and voluntary workers. The first contact with the centre is usually during one of our drop-in times, where women can come for an initial interview and a confidential, one-to-one discussion about their needs and expectations of the centre. They can then work out an action plan with us about which of the services would benefit them the most or whether there are alternative, local service providers who might be better able to meet their needs. Our drop-in times are every Monday, 5-8pm (except bank holiday Mondays) and every Friday from 10am until 1pm.
The Well Women Centre would not be able to offer any of these services without the help of our dedicated team of volunteers. We have approximately 60 volunteers who work 2-3 shifts per week on average, in areas of counselling, complementary therapies, admin, and drop-in support. In addition we have an excellent board of trustees who are local women volunteers. The centre is mainly funded by the PCT (Primary Care Trust) and WMDC (Wakefield Metropolitan District Council)
